The short version

What sand damage is

Sand damage ("sandblasting") is what wind-driven sand, dust and gravel do to a vehicle's paint, glass and lights in a windstorm or on desert highways: thousands of tiny chips erode the clearcoat on the hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors and A-pillars so the paint looks dull and no amount of washing or polishing brings it back, while the windshield and headlights pit and haze. Because it's caused by a weather event, it's usually a comprehensive claim if you carry comprehensive coverage — you file, the insurer inspects and approves, the shop refinishes the approved panels, and you pay your comprehensive deductible.

  • A real event — a sandstorm, a wind advisory, a gravel truck — not gradual wear
  • We inspect and document every panel and the glass
  • You file with your insurer
  • We repair what's approved
  • The windshield can be part of the same claim
The money question

Is sand damage covered by insurance?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive is the part of an auto policy that pays for damage from events other than a collision — hail, falling objects, wind-blown debris, a cracked windshield. Damage from a specific sandstorm or wind event generally qualifies; gradual sun fading, oxidation and everyday wear are excluded on standard policies. You pay your comprehensive deductible, which is often lower than your collision deductible; some policies handle glass under a separate glass provision — check yours. Whether a claim affects your premium depends on your insurer — ask your agent. We can't promise what your insurer will approve; we can document the damage properly so the adjuster sees exactly what the wind did.

What sand damage looks like

Wash the car, then look at the nose in direct sun.

  • Hood, bumper, mirrors and A-pillars look dull and gritty even after a wash
  • Feels like fine sandpaper under your hand
  • Headlights hazy, and the output at night is down
  • Windshield sparkles or glares at night from pitting
  • Polishing doesn't bring it back, because the clear is chipped away
Why it's real here

The National Weather Service issues wind advisories for the Victor Valley — Victorville, Hesperia, Apple Valley, Adelanto — through the year, with blowing dust and gusts past 50 mph on I-15 north of the Cajon Pass, and Santa Ana events hit the valley every fall and winter. If your car was out in one of those and the front end went dull, that's an event.

Write down the date and where the car was. The adjuster will want it.

Process

How the insurance part works

Wind-blown sand and gravel damage is a comprehensive claim on most policies — it's an event, like hail. Here's the honest sequence.

Every panel and the glass gets photographed before the estimate goes out.
  1. We inspect and document

We inspect the car and document every affected panel and the glass with photos — hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors, A-pillars, headlights, windshield — in daylight, in the file.

  2. You report the claim

You report the claim to your insurer and tell them you're using Round 2 Refinish. Give them the date and the road.

  3. The adjuster reviews our estimate

The adjuster reviews our estimate, in person or from our photos. If pitting shows on a panel they missed, we write a supplement with photos and get approval — from your insurer and from you — before that work is done.

  4. We repair what's approved

We repair and repaint what your insurer approves, and coordinate the windshield if it's pitted. Photo updates while the car is here.

  5. You pay your deductible at pickup

You pay your policy deductible at pickup. We settle the rest with your insurer.

The work

The repair

Sandblasting is a paint job with an insurance file attached.

  • Light pitting

If the chips haven't gone through the clear, a compound and polish can sometimes level it. If your fingernail doesn't catch, polishing is worth trying first. See paint correction.

  • Real sandblasting

Eroded clear is sanded back, the panel primed and sealed, then basecoat and clear go on, blended into the next panel and baked in our Platinum Finishing Systems downdraft booth — the same process as any refinish we do, matched from your factory code and a spray-out card.

  • Headlights

Hazed lenses are polished and re-cleared where the lens is sound, or replaced where the pitting is through.

  • Windshield

Pitted glass gets coordinated with the paint so the car leaves once, not twice.

Rock chips on the freeway — claim or not?

A handful of chips on a hood is normal wear and usually a customer-pay touch-up or a hood repaint. A real wind event that blasts the whole front end is a claim. Text us photos and we'll tell you honestly which one you have.

Chips matter even when they're not a claim. Each one is bare primer, and bare primer is where rust starts. A dab of touch-up seals a few; a dense field means a hood repaint blended into the fenders so it doesn't read a shade off.

After the repair, paint protection film on the front end is the way to keep it from happening again — offered separately, never folded into the claim.

Sand damage and comprehensive claim questions

Does insurance cover sandstorm damage to my car?

Usually, if you carry comprehensive coverage — it's a weather event, not a collision. You file the claim, the insurer inspects and approves the repair, and you pay your comprehensive deductible. We document the damage so the claim is clear; we can't promise what your insurer will approve.

How do I know it's sand damage and not just dirty paint?

Wash it. If the hood, bumper and mirrors still look dull and gritty in sunlight and feel like fine sandpaper under your hand, the clear coat has been chipped away and polishing won't fix it. Hazy headlights and a windshield that glares at night from pitting go with it.

Do I have to pay my deductible?

Yes. Your deductible is your part of the claim, paid to the shop at pickup. California law (Penal Code §551) prohibits body shops from reducing or offsetting it.

Can the windshield and headlights be part of the same claim?

Windshield pitting can be part of the same comprehensive claim; some policies handle glass under a separate glass provision, so check yours. We coordinate the glass and handle the paint, lights and trim so it's one repair.

My hood has rock chips from the freeway — claim or not?

A handful of chips is normal wear and usually a customer-pay touch-up or a hood repaint. A real wind event that blasts the whole front end is a claim. Text us photos and we'll tell you honestly which one you have.
